Dr Anu Susan Varghese

1981 - 2022

Dr Anu Susan Varghese, age 40, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Friday June 24th, 2022 after a courageous 6 month battle with cancer (Ewings Sarcoma).

Born in Visakhapatnam, India on June 14, 1981, our Mama, Anu was a devoted daughter, aunt, sister, cousin, friend and someone whom you could lean on to when in need. She will be remembered for her kind and loving nature, her selfless and passionate spirit and being the happy person for everyone.  Known to many as Anu or Kochumole or Anususan or Anuma, she was loved by everyone she met and interacted whether it was at School, College, Hospital, Church or Community.

Anu did her early schooling in Visakhapatnam at St Joseph’s School and Raghu Junior College, thereafter she joined St John’s Medical College, Bangalore for her medicine. Her passion to support the poor was so strong that despite being a motion sick person, as part of her internship, she travelled to Andaman & Nicobar Islands in aid of the local population suffering due to the aftereffects of the devastating Tsunami.  She moved to UK in 2009 and started her work here as a neonatal paediatrician at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. Seeing the sufferings of the little ones, she was determined to undertake research in infectious disease and took on this task in addition.

Around this time, Appu was born on her birthday in 2015 and soon Kuttu in 2017 on the following day of her birthday.  After juggling so many responsibilities, she finally decided to train to become a GP.  She cleared her AKT with highest scores in her deanery after which she was diagnosed with the dreaded Ewing’s Sarcoma and started her treatment.  She was very passionate about her faith especially her devotion to Mother Mary that when she was in absolute pain at the end, she shouted out “JESUS COME”, and breathed her last.

Appu and Kuttu are now surrounded with the love and care of our father (Ka) Dr Roney Joseph, grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins and all the dear friends of our mama.

Mama was extremely grateful for the care, support and guidance from (Lancaster GP), Dr Nasim Ali, Oncologist and her entire care team at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre Liverpool.  She felt strongly that she would not have gotten so far remaining fully conscious and even discussing her various options with the oncologist even a couple of hours before her last breath.
